White mulberry was brought to North America as food for silkworms during early attempts to establish an American silk industry. The industry never fully took hold, but the trees did. They grow remarkably quickly and mature females can produce tremendous quantities of sweet fruit.

Robins, catbirds, cedar waxwings, squirrels, raccoons, foxes, and deer all enjoy the fruit. Birds spread the seeds from their favorite perches, so young mulberries frequently appear beneath fence lines and posts, marking the movements of animals across the landscape.
