Mayapple spreads by underground rhizomes, forming broad colonies across moist woodland floors. Its umbrella-like leaves conceal a single white flower, followed by a yellow, lemon-shaped fruit.

The fully ripe fruit is fragrant and delicious, though animals often find it before people do. All other parts of the plant, including the unripe fruit and seeds, are toxic. Mayapple also contains podophyllotoxin, a powerful medicinal compound.
