Jewelweed
Impatiens capensis
Field Notes
Riparian / Part Shade
Thrives in the damp, partly shaded ground of Dark Hollow, often along woodland edges, seeps, and disturbed places. Interestingly, these are some of the same places where poison ivy readily grows, so the two plants are frequently found near one another.
That companionship has long been noticed. The juicy stems and leaves of jewelweed have traditionally been crushed and rubbed on skin exposed to poison ivy to soothe itching and irritation, though evidence for preventing or treating the rash is limited.
There is something fitting in their shared niche: the plant that irritates and the plant traditionally used for relief can emerge from the same patch of ground.
